In 2006, I was poet in residence at a school in the USA.

It was very interesting to see how American creative writing students responded to poetry exercises delivered by a Brit.

I got quite a long way on my English accent.

Their poems revealed preoccupations slightly different to those of UK students, reflecting the pressures of their school system and their young lives as teenagers in America. They expressed themselves differently, too.

But there was also a great deal of common ground.

I enjoy continuing links with the school and in January 2012 did a poetry session with a Seniors class via Skype.

Here’s a one-minute clip of the hour-long session.
